RALEIGH — There’s no question, school can be expensive. And going back to college after a few years on the job can be a difficult decision to make. However, a new online university is marketing itself as an alternative to traditional higher education through its services and its price tag.

Western Governor’s University recently started accepting students from North Carolina. WGU-NC’s Chancellor Catherine Truitt sat down with Spectrum News Anchor Caroline Blair for a two-part interview on the changing face of higher education in the state.

Unlike traditional private and state funded colleges and universities, Truitt says they do not look for students just coming out of high school. They cater their online degrees to those who are already working in the field, or looking to earn a degree while working.

You may have seen their advertisements offering a “suprisingly affordable” education. But what does that mean? Truitt says not only does the school charge less than most traditional state universities in North Carolina, but it also allows you to expedite the process of obtaining your degree, which can cut down immensely on long term costs.

Truitt says, in addition, general scholarships and others for military members and future teachers are available to help ease the burden.
