The nonstop action of hockey means players get a serious workout, and an organization in Brooklyn is providing an opportunity for kids of all ages to hit the ice. NY1's Roger Clark laced up the skates for his latest Fit Kids February report.

The sound of sticks on the ice is one you hear a lot during practice for kids in the Greater New York City Ice Hockey League. It's music to the ears of the young players.

"It's very enjoyable for me," said hockey player Alex Gargano.

"It's very fun because you got to shoot, you got to pass, you got to do all that stuff on the ice," said hockey player Vita DiBona.

The organization offers hockey for kids as young as 4 through high school at Abe Stark Rink in Coney Island. The programs range from competitive travel teams to free learn-to-skate sessions on Saturday mornings.

"Once they put on the equipment, it's like putting on a Halloween costume to them," said team manager Peter DiBona. "They're hooked as soon as they get their equipment on, and they have a great time."

When it comes to getting fit, you rarely stop moving playing hockey, so it can really do the trick.

"I've been on vacations with my children, and they ask, 'Well, your kids are so fit. Do they belong to a gym? Do they go to a gym?' And I say, 'No. They're eight years old. They play hockey," Peter DiBona said.

Clark: Do you feel like it keeps you in good physical condition?

Timothy Ganun, hockey player: Yeah, I think so. If you do this job good enough, then you get to the NHL."

He's not the only one with hockey dreams here.

"I want to go to Boston College and the Olympics when I grow up, and also be the first NHL girl," said hockey player Olivia DiBona.

Being a hockey fan, I subjected the kids to my poor skating in jeans as they did circles around me basically. So would I make it with the New York Stars team?

Jonathan Brits, hockey player: Do you want to be waterboy?

Clark: Waterboy? That's it, let's go, gloves off.

Don't worry, there were no fisticuffs or trips to the penalty box. After all, this is all about fun and staying fit. So the message from these hockey lovers?

"I just have one thing for the people who sit on the couch all day. Get up and work out," said hockey player James Silverio.
