Former Congressman Maurice Hinchey has died.

The 20-year representative worked for a large portion of the state, stretching from the Hudson Valley to the Finger Lakes, after spending 17 years in the state assembly. Hinchey announced in 2011 that he was being treated for cancer, which led to his retirement from public office.

The former Congressman worked to rid the Hudson River of PCBs, restore historic Kingston and secure funds for the Walkway Over the Hudson.

Congressman John Faso offered condolences in a statement on Hinchey's passing, saying in part, "Maurice was a fierce defender of the environment and left an important mark on New York State from his years as Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Conservation."

Hinchey, a Hudson Valley resident, said serving his hometown had been the greatest pleasure of his life.
