"They came up here with the stretcher and they went there and they brought the person down right there, come down, and they were pumping the portable respirator," neighbor Roselle Green said.

The building is part of a set of attached row houses right next door to the home of Joyce Whyte.

"Where the fire was, because we have the same thing, her living room is with my living room," Whyte said.

Sixty different firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the fire and attempted to knock the fire down while also trying to save the woman trapped inside.

Surveillance video from a neighbor shows the moment the victim's nephews trying, unsuccessfully, to get their aunt out of the home.

Neighbors said the home has been poorly maintained for years now, although there is no indication at this point that had anything to do with the fire. Many in the community said they've tired to be supportive and helpful.

"I said to them, ‘Come on, guys, let's clean up,’" Whyte said. "I said, ‘I'll offer to help you, if you need bags, whatever you want, I will give it to you just to make the place look like somebody lives here. But it didn't work."

The victim's brother told NY1 his sister had been depressed since the passing of their mother six years ago. Whyte said that's around the time she noticed changes to the home and in the victim's behavior.

"If I see her, I say hello," Whyte said. "If I don't see her I would check on her and call her and say like how are you. But most times she won't answer. She won't open, so I just leave them alone."

Fire officials said there were no other injuries.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control shortly after 3 a.m., authorities said. No other structures were damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Neighbors also told NY1 that they had not seen signs of working utilities, such as electricity, in the home recently. NY1 has reached out to fire investigators to confirm whether the utilities were turned on in the home at the time of the fire.
