A man was killed early Sunday morning after he lost control of his car and slammed into a pole in Queens, according to city police. Sources told NY1 he was racing another driver at the time.

It happened shortly before 1 a.m. near Review Avenue and Van Dam Street in Maspeth.

Police said Jesus Montenegro-Posada, 35, was driving a 1997 Honda Civic westbound on Review Avenue when he struck the traffic light pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's unclear how fast he was going, but pieces of the car were scattered on the grass near the scene and the pole was split in two on impact.

Witnesses captured Montenegro-Posada's final moments on dramatic cellphone video, on which people can be heard shouting, "He's moving, call 911!"

The local city councilman said illegal racing has been a problem in the area for years.

"We know how dangerous it is, and last night we saw how deadly it is," Queens City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said. "It's not going to stop, I fear, even with this tragic crash, unless measures are taken."

Montenegro-Posada's friends declined to speak on camera, but they set up a memorial at the scene as they paid their final respects. Some even peeled off in their cars in his honor.

Montenegro-Posada's friends said they were mourning in private, but one told us he did a few laps while he raced the other car and decided to do one more before he crashed.

The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.
