Kids from all five boroughs on Spring Break can head to New York City Parks for free activities this week.

On Monday urban park rangers taught students how to use a compass and a map to navigate their way around Pelham Bay Park.

Other activities offered this week include archery lessons, nature exploration, and wilderness survival activities.  It's all part of  "Kids Week" which includes indoor and outdoor events led by Urban Park Rangers.

Organizers say Kids Week is the perfect opportunity for the city’s students to step out of the classrooms and into nature to learn useful skills.

We spoke with one 14-year-old who took part in the event in the Bronx Monday.

"I mainly wanted to come and learn about compasses because I don't know how to use them yet. I know how to use the one on my phone but I want to really know how to be an explorer," said Sean Hargrow, a student.

"In your free time, when the kids are out, the parks are a great way for them to have fun, relax, recreate and enjoy their time off," said Leeann Debydeen, an Urban Park Ranger.

On Tuesday students can head to the Salt Marsh Nature Center in Marine Park, Brooklyn at one in the afternoon for a Sea Shore Exploration Hike.
