PHILADELPHIA, N.Y. — The oldest known polar bear in captivity has died in Philadelphia, but she was a Rochester native.

Coldilocks was euthanized at age 37 because of a serious decline in her health.

She was born at Rochester's Seneca Park Zoo in 1980.

Coldilocks was only here for less than a year before she moved to the Philadelphia Zoo, where she lived out the rest of her life.

At 37 Coldilocks lived longer than most of her companions, as the zoo says polar bears typically live to about 23.

Seneca Park Zoo director Larry Sorel relesed a statement saying:

“Coldilocks’ long life is a testament to the great care she received in human care. While sad for Philadelphia, I’m sure during her long life she inspired many people to care about polar bears.”
