The Seneca County Sheriff's Office has warned residents to be on alert for a phone scam that has hit neighboring counties.

Deputies said individuals claiming to be from the Civil Division of the Sheriff's Office are requesting civil fees that they say have been court-ordered and must be paid by a pre-paid Visa card to avoid further legal action.

The scam has been reported in both Wayne and Cayuga Counties.

The sheriff is reminding resident that the office does not contact people by phone regarding payments.

Deputies say to disregard any calls from someone demanding cash payment and never give out personal identifying information over the phone.
