ROCHESTER N.Y. -- Siblings have been forced to overcome a great deal of pain, while a mother is now unable to receive daily visits from her son.

According to Rochester police, Maurice Johnson, 50 died from injuries following a two-vehicle collision on Lake Avenue on Saturday.

Police said the driver and victims wife Malachia Wallace-Johnson, 46 fled the scene.

Spectrum News spoke to Maurice’s sister Traci Smith who said it’s not just the family who’s hurt.

“It affects a lot of people, but to know that it was his wife it’s just very hurtful,” said Smith.

His mother, Bernice Johnson, said those around her say Maurice was helpful and comforting to neighbors.

“He was always helping—this building and the people in this building.”

She also added he would typically be unaccompanied by his wife.

“No close interactions, no Sunday dinners, you know that type of thing,” said Bernice.

Questions started to rise after finding out Malachi's' past record. Police say her license was revoked in 2016 and she accumulated 21 suspensions.

“We knew nothing about any of those charges at all that she had from previous years,” said Smith.

Wallace-Johnson has now been charged with leaving the scene of the incident, aggravated unlicensed operation, and operating a motor vehicle without an interlock device.

“She could have called me even if she was in an accident and say, look, we were in an accident and Maurice got hurt and he's in the hospital—but he was in the hospital and he died by himself because I didn't even know he was in an accident until the investigators knocked on my door at two o'clock in the morning to tell me that he didn't survive," said Bernice.

Smith added, “There will never be closure because my brother is no longer here, but definitely justice.”
