AUSTIN, Texas -- After a spike of motorcycle accidents in Austin, local motorcycle shop owners offer advice to riders of all skill levels.

Following weeks of low temperatures and icy roads, Austin motorcycle riders are itching get back on the road.

“You see that happen when the weather’s been bad and all of a sudden you get a couple of good days everyone gets back on their bikes," Wesley Hayslip, owner of Motorangutan said. "When you see a large influx of people riding their bikes that’s when you start getting more accidents.”

Saturday was no exception. Austin Police department reported three motorcycle accidents within 30 minutes. Hayslip said most motorcycle accidents and injuries can be avoided with proper preparation.

“It’s education, you gotta get better, improve your skill level," Hayslip said. "The other thing is wear your safety gear because accidents happen whether they’re your fault or not.”

Hayslip said accidents will happen, but the key to preventing injury is staying protected, head to toe.

“I have a lot of customers that they come in like yeah I crashed but I ha all my gear on I just dusted myself off and I was fine," he said. "But I’ve had the other customers that come in that say I crashed but I didn’t have anything on, I’m all skinned up."

Rider Matt Baird said extra precautions could have stopped his first accident.

“Went down in a 20 mph turn, hit some oil, spilled me to the right and went off road," Baird said. "If I would have had a little bit more classes and teaching I would’ve been able to save it.”

He said the key to staying safe is knowing your limits before you ride.

“You abuse alcohol, you’re going die. You abuse riding a motorcycle, you’re going die. So just be safe, don’t be over confident and learn your bike before you start really getting aggressive riding with it," said Baird.

Austin Motor Academy and Total Rider offer motorcycle courses for riders of all skill levels.
