An investigation of Perez began in the summer of 2017. After questioning, she admitted to getting paid $50 for each immigrant and $100 for the last person she would pick up, according to arrest papers.

She added she would later turn those people over to another smuggler for an additional fee.

The case was investigated by the San Antonio Police Department and Homeland Security.

In July, 10 people died inside a trailer parked at a Southwest Side Walmart store in a human smuggling situation.
