NEW YORK - The city fire department says unattended candles are to blame for a fire in Chelsea that left more than a dozen people homeless Monday.

Fire officials say it started around 3:30 p.m. on the top floor of 144 West 19th Street.

Smoke alarms were also working. 

The building is right next to a fire station, so crews were able to get on the scene immediately.

One tenant and one firefighter were hurt.

The Red Cross says it is helping people find temporary lodging.

Investigators determine the cause of a deadly high-rise fire in Manhattan.

Meanwhile, the FDNY says smoking accidentally sparked flames Christmas morning on the 35th floor of an apartment building located at 211 West 56th Street.

The wind-whipped fire on was contained to one apartment, where 76-year-old John Doktor was found unresponsive in his bedroom and pronounced dead at the scene.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Fire officials say firefighters had a tough time with high winds and malfunctioning elevators.
