CHARLOTTE -- In a place where moments are fleeting, it can be hard to find time to stop and give pause, especially on Christmas Eve at an airport. But there's one spot at Charlotte Douglas where folks did just that.

"Get that quiet hour of reconnecting with God. Re-energizing your spirit and going on from that point. That's what this does," said American Airlines pilot Cary Inderbitzin.

Above the hustle and bustle on the second floor lies the chapel and auditorium, which hosts Sunday masses and prayer services.

"One chaplain coined it very well one time and called it loitering with a purpose," remarked Deacon David Reiser.

Reiser's served there for the last six years. He said they see all walks of life come through their doors from passengers to airport employees, and masses that range from 5 to 30 people at a time.

One traveler came in after hearing an overhead announcment, and explained he had some free time before his flight home to Chicago.

"Didn't know if I was going to be able to because of my work and travel schedule. Now that it was available it feels good," Matt Velazquez said.

What made this Sunday more special was that it was both the fourth Sunday in Advent and Christmas Eve. Double the chance to say a prayer, take communion, and sing.

"To see the people come and rejoice, and enjoy, sometimes people who don't come all the time, that they come for this special service. The decorations, the music adds to it," added Reiser.

Adding a memory to what is often a very hectic and busy travel day.
