SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- A former Stanford University swimmer, who was convicted of three counts of sexual assault last year, wants a new trial.

Brock Turner was released after spending only three months in a California jail.

His attorneys asked for a new trial Friday, saying the original one was fundamentally unfair. They claim the prosecutors created judicial prejudice by saying the assault occurred behind a dumpster when the incident happened in the open.

Turner was convicted for attacking an unconscious woman in 2015 and as part of his sentence, must now register for life as a sex offender.
