For the first time ever, minorities are making up the majority of FDNY applicants.

A record 46,000 people took the firefighter exam this year.

Compared to five years ago, there was a huge increase in the number of Asian, black, Hispanic, and Native American applicants.

Meanwhile the number of white test takers decreased slightly.

More women than ever also took the exam, an increase of 115 percent from 2012.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro credits the newfound diversity to the department's $10 million recruitment campaign.
