A firefighter was seriously hurt Thursday after fighting a five-alarm fire in the Bronx on that injured nearly 10 FDNY members.

More than 200 firefighters battled the blaze at Olmstead and Haviland Avenues in the Unionport section of the Bronx around 3:40 p.m.

The firefighter who was seriously hurt is expected to be OK. Seven other firefighters are hurt, the FDNY said, and one civilian suffered a non-life-threatening injury.

The fire department put the blaze under control around 6:35 p.m. It damaged six buildings, according to an official, entirely destroying two.

The blaze displaced 27 people.

The heat and instability of some of the buildings has complicated the fire department's efforts, FDNY Chief of Department James Leonard said.

Leonard added that there was a "very heavy" fire in the rear of the site.

An official from the fire marshal's office said the blaze was so severe that it took hours before they could safely get into the buildings to begin their investigation into how and where the fire started.

The fire department originally stated Thursday afternoon that the fire began in a basement of one of the homes.

It could take days to confirm how the fire started.
