A wake was held Thursday in the Bronx for the EMT struck and killed with her own ambulance last week after a man tried to steal it.

Family, friends, and fellow colleagues gathered at the Joseph A. Lucchese Funeral Home in Van Nest to pay their respects to Yadira Arroyo.

The 44-year-old was a 14-year veteran of the FDNY and a mother of five children.

Since Arroyo's death, the family has received an outpouring of support from charitable organizations and her co-workers.

"She always wanted to feed us. She always wanted to make sure we were fed, ready to go for our shift," said paramedic Alex Tull. "Her spirit. Her care for people. She really, really cared about the patient."

"She worked sick. Refused to go home. You'd have to literally drag her off the vehicle," said paramedic David Cadogan. "Her work ethic was impeccable."

Arroyo's alleged killer, 25-year-old Jose Gonzalez, is facing murder and robbery charges.

His lawyers say he has a history of mental illness. They are asking he remain in treatment at Bellevue Hospital.

Gonzalez is due back in court April 5.

Arroyo's funeral will take place Saturday.
