Police release surveillance video of a suspect who they believe viciously beat a 15 years old girl in the Bronx. Borough reporter Erin Clarke has that story.

Police are looking for this man.

They say he severely beat a teenage girl in a Bronx park around 2 a-m Monday after starting a conversation with her at the Gun Hill Road subway station a few blocks away.

"At some point she's accosted from the street," said NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce. "She's then pulled into the Bronx River area, not far from there and she's assaulted rather dramatically. We believe she fought very hard."

The victim whose name has not been released is being treated at Montefiore Medical Center. She was listed in stable condition.

The incident happened near East 213th Street and Bronx Boulevard. People who live and work in the area say they are now on high alert.

"Very scary, very scary," said one neighbor. "The neighborhood is not the greatest. You have to watch your back."

"You can't even come out here and be safe," said another.

"I try to stay away from over here," a third said.

During the day, there are frequently people walking and running through this part of Bronx Park known as Shoelace Park. It is considered a leafy haven along the Bronx River.

But at night, this urban oasis can turn dangerous.

"It's a thick forest," said one. "When the trees are there blocking views. You can't see anything."

Residents we spoke to say there has been an increased police presence since Monday, and that officers usually do a good job of patrolling the area.

But Shoelace Park was closed at the time of the attack.

"The train station that it occurred at is a safe train station," said City Councilman Andy King. "I don't want anybody to be confused by the park that this incident occurred in that this is a violent community or an unsafe community."

The local Councilman, King says he will work with the city's Transportation and Parks departments to see if more lighting can be added to the park.

At the time, the existing lighting was working properly.

The police investigation is continuing.
