The Bronx Zoo's African Plains exhibit celebrates its 75th anniversary Sunday.

The exhibit recreates the African Savanna, and it was the first time the zoo displayed animals in bar-less, natural-looking settings similar to what someone would see in the wild.

In its early days, the African Plains exhibit attracted nearly 85,000 people in one day — a record for the zoo at that time.

More than seven decades later, visitors can see many of the same animals.

The exhibit's creators said their goal was to use the new format to educate the public about the need to protect both wildlife and their habitats.
