The state is pitching in to help protect historical archives of the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium.

A nearly $17,000 grant will be used to clean and house more than 12,000 photo negatives dating back to the 19th century.

The Wildlife Conservation Society says that's just a small portion of the 70,000 photos in their collection.

Among the photos is one of four Eskimo dogs donated to the zoo after Robert Peary's 1898 Arctic expedition.

The WCS says it hopes to eventually digitize the entire collection.
