A Rikers Island correction officer is accused by the Department of Investigation of allegedly smuggling weapons and drugs to inmates.

Officials say Officer Kevin McKoy was caught carrying 16 packages of synthetic marijuana, narcotics and seven scalpel blades into work on Tuesday. They say he hid the contraband in his pant legs.

They say the synthetic marijuana was wrapped in latex gloves, and each blade was wrapped in tape and buried inside the drugs.

Investigators say they were tipped off to search him during the afternoon shift change.

Officers also searched his car and Brooklyn home, and they say they found found cocaine, marijuana and blades. They believe he was preparing to bring them into the jail.

"What's frightening is that just a few weeks after correction officer Raymond Calderon gets slashed with a blade, we've now got a correction officer smuggling seven scalpel blades into Rikers, taking bribes to deliver those scalpel blades to inmates," said Mark Peters, commissioner of the Department of Investigation.

McKoy is facing a long list of charges, including 17 counts of promoting prison contraband and criminal sale of a controlled substance. He's been suspended as the investigation continues.
