A Bronx business district is experiencing a renaissance and elected officials are working to keep the momentum going. NY1's Erin Clarke filed the following report.

In Kingsbridge, they are open for business.

"There is a real boom going on right now with two large malls opening up at the north end and the south end," said City Councilman Andrew Cohen.

"What we've seen is really a renaissance in the community," said State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz.

Two malls have opened in the last two years at the opposite ends of the Kingsbridge-Broadway Business District - one on West 230th Street, the other on West 238th Street.

The big box stores and the bargains are drawing shoppers who never really visited Kingsbridge before. Community leaders see that as an opportunity.

"Not only have people look at the malls and shop at the malls, but take full advantage of all of the stores in between," said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

As a result, they're looking to spruce up the Broadway business corridor by giving it a more welcoming feel that will encourage folks to venture out and shop along eight blocks of Broadway lined mainly with mom and pop shops.

A report by the borough president, Councilman Andrew Cohen and Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz calls for several improvements including improving lighting under the elevated subway line, repairing sidewalks, removing old parking meters and graffiti, and installing uniform street furniture from garbage cans to planters. They're ideas community board members eagerly endorse.

"Now we need the city to really step up and say this isn't 1975 Broadway corridor anymore, this is 2015, so we really need that kind of investment, said Community Board 8 Economic Development Committee Chair Sergio VillaVerde.

Elected officials say the investements will have to come from several sources.

"That would mean bringing in money possibly from the state, possibly from the city, capital money might be available," Dinowitz said.

It's still too early for a timetable on the plan, but the hope is that releasing the report will spotlight the needs of a community that is growing again.
