Six guards at Rikers Island have been fired for beating an inmate who is mentally ill.

Investigators say Robert Hinton was beaten in 2012 for refusing to go to solitary confinement, but the guards allegedly made up a story that Hinton put one of them in a chokehold.

The 27-year-old inmate had a broken nose and other injuries.

Joseph Ponte, commissioner of the Department of Correction, followed the advice of an administrative judge, who recommended in September that the guards be fired.

Their union said it'll fight to get their jobs back.
