ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester firefighter was taken to the hospital with burns while fighting a house fire on the city's east side.

It started as a couch on fire on the second floor of a home on Weld Street.

Firefighters say the flames caused extensive damage before they got things under control in about 20 minutes.

There's also some heat damage to the house next door.

Three adults and two kids got out safely Sunday afternoon, but one firefighter was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with minor burns. He's expected to be OK.

"He was at the top of the stairs waiting for the hose line to get charged," said Deputy Chief Tom May. "The window broke, the fire got bigger, he wasn't able to back out quick enough and his shoulder got burned."

The Red Cross says it's now helping nine people.
