BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- New details emerged Wednesday about Tuesday's police chase in Binghamton involving a trooper who was hit by a vehicle.

State troopers were in pursuit of a suspect wanted on an active warrant around 5 p.m. on Conklin Avenue.

The suspect, 36-year-old James Giacalone of Glen Aubrey, took off, leading state police through several city streets, according to police. He then crashed into a utility pole near Alfred Street and Conklin Avenue.

But when state police attempted arrest him, they say Giacalone drove his car forward, hitting one of the troopers.

The trooper then shot Giacalone in the face, but he was still able to drive away. Giacalone was spotted on foot a short distance away and taken into custody.

The trooper was taken to a hospital with leg and facial injuries, and has since been released.

Giacalone was transferred to a hospital in central Pennsylvania.

Charges have not yet been filed, and the trooper's name has not been released.

People living in the area say they were in disbelief.

"I would have never thought something like this would have happened. It makes you feel a little worried, definitely a little worried,” said Stephen Cohrs, a Binghamton resident.

“Let the residents of the south side of Binghamton know there is no danger to them. The suspect is in custody and the situation is at hand,” said New York State Police Captain Jeff VanAuken.

Investigators were on scene in downtown Binghamton for several hours.
