After a record warm start to winter, the city is facing a strong nor'easter with heavy snow and blizzard conditions this weekend.
About eight to 14 inches of snow is expected to fall in and around the city, but higher totals are possible if the storm stalls or rapidly intensifies.
Brooklyn and Staten Island will see the heaviest snowfall with totals closer to the 14-inch mark. Most other areas will see about a foot snow. Some locations in the Bronx are in line for about 8 inches of snowfall.
Here in the city, snow should begin falling between 11 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, with the heaviest precipitation occurring between 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
It should ease off by 7 p.m. and taper off around midnight.
The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the five boroughs, which is in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon.
Wind gusts will be near 50 mph and visibilities near zero.
Blowing snow means visibility will be reduced even if there is not a huge amount of snowfall.
As a result, the mayor has issued a winter weather emergency for the city from 8 a.m. Saturday until 12 a.m. Sunday.
A Coastal Flood Warning is also in effect for Saturday.
At the Battery, water levels are expected to be two to four feet above normal with only minor flooding expected.
