U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara was fired Saturday, apparently after declining to resign at the request of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

A source with information about Bharara's actions told the Associated Press that he did intend to comply with Jeff Sessions' request to resign, which was issued Friday.

Forty-six U.S. Attorneys have been asked to step down as part of a so-called housecleaning of holdovers from the Obama administration.

The source told the AP that Bharara, who handles the state's Southern District, would not leave his post. Within a very brief period of time, Bhrarara had announced his firing on Twitter.

In November, he met with then President-elect Donald Trump at Trump Tower, and told reporters he was asked to stick around.

Robert Capers, the Brooklyn-based attorney for the Eastern District of New York, confirmed he has resigned.
