Much-needed track repairs at Penn Station are still on schedule halfway through the process.

Amtrak Chief Engineer Gery Williams says, four out of eight weeks into the project, the work is about 50 percent complete.

Emergency track work was ordered after a series of train derailments, signal issues and mechanical malfunctions.

Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency within the MTA to speed up the repair process.

With work at Penn Station going smoothly, officials are now eyeing future projects.

"We will ask our partners, MTA, LIRR, New Jersey Transit and others, for maybe some extended outages after we have well-planned them, looked at them and determined the need for them," Williams said. "Again, we'll have to work with everybody concerned. There's work to be done not only in Penn Station, but all around."

Any future projects would still need to go through a significant vetting process.

Repairs at Penn Station are expected to be done by September 1.
