With service changes going into effect Monday at Penn Station, MTA Chairman Joe Lhota offered some tips Sunday on how people can minimize the impact on their commute.

The transit agency will add two more passenger cars to many Long Island Railroad (LIRR) trains, and additional trains will be deployed during rush hour.

Riders are slated to pay reduced fares and receive free subway transfers at the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, and Hunters Point and Jamaica stations in Queens.

The MTA is also offering peak-time ferries from Hunters Point and Glen Cove to 34th St. The MTA also intends to roll out buses to Midtown from eight locations on Long Island.

Some Amtrak trains will go into Grand Central Terminal for the first time in 26 years.

Transit officials said the agency will reduce LIRR service in and out of Penn Station by about 20 percent.

Lhota and the MTA have urged straphangers to plan ahead, keep an eye on MTA schedules, and give themselves more time for their commutes.

The Amtrak repair work is expected to finish by Sept. 1.
