The nighttime might not be the right time to ride the subway.

The head transit official is warning commuters that more overnight closures are on the way.

MTA Chairman Joe Lhota says subway riders should expect more, but not all, lines to go dark at night as the agency works to fix the failing system.

Frequent repairs and inspections are essential to prevent delays, derailments and other issues.

Speaking on AM 970, Lhota says prime time for track work is between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

"That's when we get a lot of intense work done. Just take all resources and plow it into one area, and then move down to the next station and all the way through the tracks," Lhota said. "We're not going to see a permanent shutdown every night of the entire system. That's not in the cards."

New York is the only city in the world with a subway system that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
