Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says a major project that could bring relief to Penn Station commuters is being threatened.

He and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker are calling on President Trump to reverse proposed budget cuts to the so-called Gateway Tunnel.

The project would add two new train tunnels beneath the Hudson River, eventually doubling capacity between New Jersey and Penn Station.

"This is the first real test whether President Trump will put his money where his mouth is, and fund infrastructure here in New York," said Schumer.

"This pain people are feeling right now is a mere rainstorm compared to the tsunami that people will feel if these rail tunnels have to be shut down to be repaired," Booker said. "Instead of a problem lasting weeks, it will be a problem lasting more than a year."

Both senators say the current headaches at Penn Station have been caused by an historic failure to invest in infrastructure projects like Gateway.
