Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling on the federal government to help repair Penn Station.

In a letter to President Donald Trump, Cuomo says the federal government must recognize the deplorable conditions at the transit hub as an emergency.

He asks for help with short-term repairs and transportation alternatives, as a long-term resolution.

Cuomo says the station has been in rough shape for years.

Amtrak, which currently owns and operates Penn Station, says it's planning six weeks of repairs to fix aging equipment.

Work will go from July 7 to July 25, then again from August 4 to August 28.

The work will mean service disruptions for LIRR, NJ Transit, and Amtrak - roughly a quarter fewer trains actually running.

Earlier this month, Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie suggested that Penn Station be managed by a private contractor.

Penn Station has been plagued with serious problems since March. That includes two minor train derailments and days of delays and cancellations.
