After nearly a century of planning, a train carried passengers through the Second Avenue Subway for the first time.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo took the inaugural ride on the line Saturday night, but it won't be open to the public until noon Sunday.
They hosted a sneak peek at the 72nd Street station.
The ceremonial ride went up to the 96th Street station.
Cuomo says he's overjoyed about the opening.
"This is all good news. This is like a late Christmas present," he said. "These stations are not your grandfather's stations. They really are beautiful."
The Second Avenue stations are part of the Q line, which will now run from 96th Street to Coney Island.
The train will run on a limited schedule until 24-hour service starts on January 9.
