A transformer exploded and caused a fire in the 2nd Avenue subway tunnel Friday afternoon in Manhattan, according to the city fire department, but no one was injured.

A filter in an electrical room caught fire underground in an "ancillary building" at 2nd Avenue and East 96th Street, according to the MTA, which a contractor put out.

The MTA said there was no reported damage to MTA infrastructure, and the fewer than 12 workers on-site at the location were evacuated.

The MTA did not report any subway service disruptions or utility impacts.

A Con Edison outage map showed no outages in Manhattan.
