Bike riders rejoice at having their own lane on the Pulaski Bridge.

Queens Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer was among the dozens of riders who took the ceremonial first ride on the new pathway, Friday. It connects Queens to Brooklyn. Before, riders shared a pathway with pedestrians. Officials say the new bike path will make the bridge safer for everyone.

"With all of the new young people who are moving into Queens a lot of people are biking and walking and we want them to bike and walk safely," Van Bramer said.

"It legitimizes cycling as a form of transportation so I think it will have a huge impact for more people to start bicycling you need safer infrastructure and this provides that," one cyclist said.

Officials say thousands of cyclists already use the Pulaski Bridge every day.
