Advocates and elected officials are urging the MTA to offer free out-of-station subway transfers at two Brooklyn stations.
The Junius Street station and Livonia Avenue station are just one block away from each other, but currently, riders who transfer between each station are forced to pay two fares.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and the Riders Alliance launched the #maketheconnection campaign to petition for a free transfer.
Adams says more than 5,400 riders have to pay an extra fare daily.
Those NY1 spoke to say the extra fare is unfair to commuters.
"It's clearly unacceptable that we can have free transfers in certain parts of the city and not have it here in Brownsville," said one commuter. "Brownsville is not a second-class community and should not be treated as such."
"We have seniors that can't get up here, and they have to come and deal with trying to get up these steps and paying a double fare. So we're hoping this free transfer will work out and help the neighborhood," said another.
The MTA agreed to build a free connection between the two stops as part of its Capital Program, but city officials say construction won't start until at least 2018.
