LEROY, N.Y. — A Rochester man with three prior felony convictions is facing up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for being in possession of a firearm with the serial number filed off.

The LeRoy Police Department was called to a domestic violence incident in December and, when they arrived, found Joseph Cavico Jr., 49, on top of a woman with a pistol at his side. The pistol’s serial number had been “obliterated,” according to police.

Cavico was convicted of three prior felonies dating back to the 1990s, which makes it illegal for him to own a firearm.

A witness told police Cavico threatened to kill the woman and her family.

Cavico is now facing charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
