New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom's stellar 2018 season was capped Wednesday, when he was named the National League Cy Young Award winner.

DeGrom got 29 out of 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America. Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer got the other first-place vote.

DeGrom led the National League with a 1.70 earned run average and was second in strikeouts with 269. He allowed three runs or fewer in 29 straight starts to end the season.

He finished the year with only 10 wins, the fewest ever by a pitcher who won the Cy Young. That low win total was reflective of poor run support from the Mets, who averaged only 3.5 runs per game in deGrom's starts in 2018.

The Cy Young Award is given to the best pitcher in each league. Tampa Bay's Blake Snell won the American League Cy Young Award.

DeGrom is the fourth pitcher in Mets history to win a Cy Young Award. Tom Seaver won the award three times as a Met - in 1969, 1973 and 1975. Dwight Gooden won the NL Cy Young in 1985. R.A. Dickey won the award in 2012.
