The Yankees dropped Game 1 of the American League Division Series to the Red Sox Friday night, losing 5-4 at Fenway Park in Boston.

J.D. Martinez gave the Red Sox the early lead with a three-run homer off J.A. Happ in the bottom of the first inning.

Happ was pulled from the game in the third inning and was charged with all five Boston runs.

The Yankees had their chances in the later innings. Trailing 5-0, they scored two in the sixth inning, one in the seventh and one in the ninth on an Aaron Judge home run. They brought the tying run to bat in each of the last four innings, but could not get the big hit to tie it.

Game 2 of the series is Saturday night at 8:15 p.m., again in Boston. Masahiro Tanaka starts opposite David Price.
