They’re from one borough representing a big city.

After a summer filled with winning the entire Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, Staten Island’s Mid-Island Little League is in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on Little League’s biggest stage.

"It was a blast having fun with these boys every day," said Steven Martinez, a pitcher for the Mid-Island team. "Obviously, we want to have as much fun as possible, but on the field, we take it very seriously. We practice 24/7, and it's all led up to this."

"It's been surreal," said coach Joe Calabrese. "These kids are a motivated group. They play hard, they practice hard, they do great on the field. I mean, they really do."

These 12-year-olds had to win 15 consecutive games to get here. But they’re not just happy to have punched their ticket. This a process that started for the core of the group when they were 10, and they expect to do a lot more than just compete.

"They're hungry. They want to win," Calabrese said. "We won a state tournament last year, went 11-0, so we had high expectations coming in, and we anticipated being here and anticipated going home a winner."

"We just can't wait to play," said Greg Bruno, a pitcher for the Mid-Island team. "We keep grinding, and just can't wait to play."

But the Little League World Series is about much more than just baseball for these kids.

"Just being here, they're actually sharing a bathroom he told me with the team from Japan, so he's all excited about that," said Corey Hannah, the father of one of the players.

The Mid-Island boys have been on a long field trip since winning their way into the tournament Sunday in Bristol, Connecticut.

Their parents joined them Wednesday and got to see their sons cheered on in a parade float through downtown Williamsport.

"In Bristol, one of the big complaints I had was that he never answered my texts, he never called me, he’s on his own, he thinks he's 21 in college," said Joanne Cancel, the mother of one of the players. "The first night in Williamsport, he called me and text me about five times. 'Ma, my number’s three now.' And the next day, he texts me that he got new catcher's gear and was so excited and couldn't wait to use it on the big field."

And Thursday is the day they’ve all been waiting for: the first pitch of this Little League World Series. Mid-Island will take on the Midwest champs from Des Moines, Iowa at 3 p.m.
