The Jets have told cornerback Darrelle Revis they plan to release him.

Revis was the team's first-round draft pick in 2007 and played with them through the 2012 season.

He played one year each for the Buccaneers and Patriots before returning to New York in 2015.

He played in seven Pro Bowls.

But this past season, he had only one interception, and it came in the last game of the season.

Owner Woody Johnson called him one of the greatest players to ever wear a Jets uniform.

Revis' release comes less than two weeks after he was charged with aggravated assault, robbery and terroristic threats following an altercation with a fan in Pittsburgh. He denies any wrongdoing.

The 31-year-old sent out a tweet thanking Johnson, the entire organization and Jets fans.

Revis will become a free agent on March 9.
