Two major league baseball players are dead after separate car crashes in the Dominican Republic.

Kansas City Royal's star pitcher, Yordano Ventura, and former major leaguer Andy Marte both died Sunday in their native country.

Officials say Ventura died on a highway but it's not clear if he was driving the car.

The 25-year-old right-hander helped the Royals reach the World Series in 2014 and ultimately win the championship a year later against the Mets.

Highway officials say Marte — who last played for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014 — died in an unrelated car accident about 100 miles north of the capital.

He was just 33 years old.

Several players are paying tribute to the pair on Twitter.

Kansas City pitcher Brooks Pounders tweeted, "Speachless right now. The world lost a great teammate and competitor today."

Detroit Tiger's slugger Miguel Cabrera posted in Spanish earlier, "Two unfortunate losses, not only for Dominican Republic, but for the whole Latin America people."
