Investigators say speed appears to have been a factor in the boating accident that killed Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez this morning.

The Coast Guard says Fernandez was one of three people killed in a crash off Miami Beach.

Police also say that none of the passengers was wearing a life vest.

Fernandez  broke into the Majors in 2013 and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. The Cuba native was 16-and-8 this year with a 2.86 ERA.

He was named an All-Star for the second time.

Fernandez was scheduled to make his next start Monday night against the Mets in Miami.

No word yet on whether that game will be played.

The Marlins have canceled their game against the Atlanta Braves Sunday.

The team released a statement this morning, saying:

"The Miami Marlins are devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.''

Jose Fernandez was just 24 years old.
