St. John's is in the market for a new basketball coach.

St. John's announced in a release Friday that the school and basketball coach Steve Lavin have mutually agreed to part ways.

Lavin coached basketball at St. John's for five seasons.

The Red Storm won 21 games this past season, which ended in the first round of the NCAA tournament with a loss to San Diego State.

During his five years, St. John's twice made the NCAA tournament and had three 20-win seasons. Prior to his arrival, St. John's had not been in the NCAA tournament for nine years.

However, St. John's struggled in the postseason, both in the Big East Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

In 2011, Lavin had prostate cancer surgery and missed some time with the team. He returned and has not missed any time with the team since.

It seemed like there was recent momentum for Lavin to sign a contract extension, but that is not to be.

In the statement, Lavin referred specifically to seniors on the team who are on schedule to graduate. He also said, "In life, change is inevitable, so I take the long view. I'm grateful for my time teaching at St. John's University."
