June is Black Music Month, and every year our Dean Meminger marks the occasion with a special series called "Soul's Survivors." To kick things off, Dean went to Brooklyn to catch up with the legendary group "Bell Biv Devoe" at their sold-out show at Kings Theatre.

Bell Biv DeVoe are taking the crowds back to the 80s and 90s with their string of hit songs that started when they were part of the boy group, New Edition.

"It's just when you can look out there and look at a bunch of people you grew up with and they grew up with you, it is just like a family reunion," said Michael Bivens. "I think it is that kind of connection and I think that when we are in New York it energizes us and I think that when we come through I think we take them back to '83 and 1990. Yeah."

1983 was when New Edition had major hits with Candy Girl, Popcorn Love and a bunch of other songs from the young teens out of Boston which included bad boy Bobby Brown. In 1990 Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe formed Bell Biv DeVoe or BBD after New Edition broke up. Mixing the styles of Hip Hop and R&B helped them develop songs their fans will never forget.

Although proud of their Boston roots, they say New York played a big part in their success from the time they were kids.

They reflected on that while performing at Kings Theater in Brooklyn recently.

"As far as professional entertainers are concerned and the world seeing what New Edition was all about it started right here in New York City," said Ronnie DeVoe. "The five boroughs. We traveled all over the place starting at 12 o'clock at night as 13, 14, 15 year olds — we would do 3 to 5 shows at night. Starting at 12 o'clock at night, man.”

That may be a little harder to do nowadays or at least not something as enjoyable for the men who are approaching their 50s.

"So we just make the necessary adjustment but the thing for us what makes it easy is that we still love what we do," said Ricky Bell. "And like when we come to places, you could come to certain cities and the audience shows up every time. That something that you don't take for granted. When we are in rehearsals and we decided we're going to go on tour we won't make that decision unless we know that we are coming right. And we are giving people everything they expect from us and what they are paying their money for. So that part makes it a little easier for us. They know we are older, they know we have slowed down a little bit."

But not too much. And they are continuing to make new music. Their latest album is Three Stripes. And if you like BBD they are currently on tour around the country.
