The latest Scholar Athlete of the Week is just as much a leader on the basketball court as he is in the classroom. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.

At 6-foot-4, Armando Dunn is someone to look up to. He's a powerhouse on the court, a mentor to his teammates and a stellar student at Benjamin Cardozo High School.

"You always have to push yourself. You always have to do what you have to do in the classroom," Dunn says. "And the if it translates, if that hard work translates on the court or on the field or wherever you play, it just makes everything even better."

That's one thing he's trying to teach his teammates. As captain, he takes extra time out to make sure they're on top of their game in the classroom.

"Whenever somebody needed something, I would always help them out," Dunn says. "Whether it was with math, whatever subject it was. I just made our lives easier, and then everyone stays on the team, everyone does what they have to do.

Though the senior center is dedicated to his sport, academics always comes first. He's taken two college-level courses at Long Island University, is a member of the National Honor Society and is a tutor.

Dunn's teachers and coach say he sets the standard for the rest of the team.

"I think one of the things about Armando that's interesting is that he doesn't define himself first as an athlete," says Risa Eshaghian, Armando's English teacher. "I think he really sees himself as a student who plays basketball very, very well."

"Sophomores and the freshmen see how hard he works," says Ron Naclerio, Dunn's basketball coach. "Free time, he's in the library studying, doing homework, realizing that education is what's going to get you there. Basketball is the tool to get on the train, but the actual success in life is going to be the education."

Also in his free time, Dunn volunteers at a basketball camp, teaching young players the game.

"For me to bring back my experience and the things that happen to me to the younger kids is a great experience," he says.

Dunn wants to take his skills to the screen. He plans to study sports broadcasting in college and will possibly continue to play basketball.

So, for assisting his teammates in more ways than one, Armando Dunn is our Ford Lincoln of Queens NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.
