Moving to a new country and learning a second language is never easy, but our latest Queens People of the Week are doing their part in helping others feel right at home. NY1's Leisha Majtan has their story.

Margaret Culhane's professional life went from the dance floor to the classroom after she was sidelined by an injury.

The Astoria resident had been a professional dancer when she was hurt, so she went back to school to become a teacher.

"I feel like I have a second mission and a second purpose," said Culhane. "It's beyond just the professional goals I might have for myself. It's also really personally fulfilling."

Culhane is the program coordinator at LaGuardia Community College's English Language Center.

She started off her work at the center as a volunteer almost 10 years ago.

The center helps students from more than 80 different countries perfect their English.

Those who keep the center running say it needs volunteers to carry out its mission.

"We rely on volunteers to help provide out-of-the-classroom experiences in English for students," said Elizabeth Iannotti, the director of the English Language Center at LaGuardia Community College. "A lot of our students need writing help. They get a writing partner to work on their writing. Or conversation help, they work in conversation groups.

"It's just a really great resource for our students," Iannotti continued.

Culhane manages nearly 50 volunteers who help hundreds of students every semester.

"It's gratifying to work interpersonally with individuals who are aspiring to attain a certain level or proficiency of the English language," said Stephen Clark, another volunteer at the center. "And to see their expressions and see that they are making progress for themselves — it just feels good for everyone involved."

"I know they struggle and work really hard for their accomplishments, and so when they come and share with me that they got into a four-year school they really like, or they've gotten a new job they're really proud about, it's very satisfying," added Culhane.

So, for helping others achieve their "American dream," Margaret Culhane and the volunteers at the English Language Center are our Queens People of the Week.
