Pope Francis' historic visit to the United States is now in the books.

The pope winged his way back to Vatican Sunday night at the conclusion of his nine-day visit to the Cuba and the United States, hours after he leading a massive public service in Philadelphia.

His plane left Philadelphia at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time Sunday.

He celebrated his final U.S. Mass late Sunday afternoon at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

About 860,000 people showed up to the event hoping to catch a glimpse of the pope, but a handful of families from around the world were given a chance to greet Pope Francis in person.

During the Mass, Pope Francis spoke about the miracle of love and the importance of keeping families together.

"The common house can no longer tolerate sterile divisions," Pope Francis said. "The urgent challenge of protecting our home includes the concern of bringing all of the human family together in the pursuit of sustainable and integral development."

Pope Francis met with World Festival of Families organizers before he headed back to Rome.
