A new state program will aim to light up streets and reduce energy consumption.

The "Smart Street Lighting New York" program calls for 500,000 street lights to be converted to LED by 2025.

The governor's office says the initiative will reduce energy consumption, saving taxpayers $87 million annually, all while reducing greenhouse gas emissions -- with the goal of reducing energy consumption by 482 gigawatt hours or the equivalent of 45,000 homes annually. . The program is part of the governor's plan to reduce emissions by 40 percent, by 2030.

The New York Power Authority will lead the effort, offering a one-stop-shop for municipalities to replace their streetlights with the technology.

The NYPA will provide upfront financing for the projects.
