One local congressional candidate is speaking out against President Trump's 2019 federal budget.

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi is calling on the state's congressional delegation to reject the plan, which he says could eventually end long distance rail-travel in areas across the northeast.

He says the plan will cut Amtrak funding in half, along with a special cut of $128 million that would affect stations in Utica and Rome.

Brindisi says if the plan is passed, it would put a huge strain on state and local governments.

After several rail accidents in recent weeks, he says improving rail service remains a major priority.

"These cuts will harm the state's economy, inconvenience local business and tourism travel and jeopardize rail safety," said Brindisi.

The proposal is currently making its way through Congress.

Brindisi is challenging Republican Claudia Tenney in November's election.
